![]() ![]() Beyond that, the series has gorgeous art, exceptional dialogue, and an appealing premise. In reality, Ellis and Kurth executed an original and self-contained take on Ultimate Tony Stark in the span of just 4 issues. These are really just minor complaints in light of the big picture. The conclusion, in addition to being abrupt, was also pedestrian and predictable. The characters that were introduced, particularly Justine, feel flat and one-note. What it fails to do, however, is have any lasting resonance. Yes, it introduced new characters to the Ultimate Universe. Yes, it offers a new and updated vision of the great "Armor Wars" storyline. The arc concludes in just two pages, leaving me questioning the $16 I paid for the issues. I would really like to see more of this guy on other marvel books! Steve Kurth's art remains pristine throughout the issue, bringing both the characters and the action to life. In fact, the biggest payoff of the whole series comes with the concluding panel – a powerful portrait of a remorseful and dejected Tony Stark. Over the course of the series, the reader really gets a sense of how dismal the life of Tony Stark can be. Tony's morose and cynical dialogue is pitch-perfect in nearly every sequence. Ellis gives Tony a distinct voice, but one that remains consistent with his Ultimate Universe continuity. If nothing else, Ultimate Comics Armor Wars has been a vehicle for Warren Ellis to showcase his masterful handle on Tony Stark of the Ultimate Universe. In fact, the climax of the entire series takes place in only a few panels, and the payoff is not quite as impactful as one might hope for. The confrontation is both satisfying and intriguing, but wraps up too quickly. After capture, Tony is finally confronted face-to-face with the one responsible for his stolen technology and valuable ornament. After an abrupt rescue, Tony and Justine pursue the mysterious Ghost back to America when they are attacked en route. Tony is beaten and lying somewhere in a body of water after another encounter with the Ghost. The issue picks up directly where it left off at the end of issue #3. ![]()
